Best Budget Hotel Near Potters Bar? Premier Inn South Mimms Review
So this was part of our recent UK trip, and during that time, we spent a few nights at the Premier Inn South Mimms / Potters Bar hotel while working in the Potters Bar area.
We were looking for something simple, affordable, and convenient—nothing fancy, just a clean place to sleep that was close to where we needed to be. This hotel ended up being only about 10 minutes from our work location, which made it an easy choice.
Now let’s set expectations right away—this is not a luxury hotel, and it’s not pretending to be. This is very much a budget-friendly roadside hotel just off the motorway, geared more toward business travelers, road trippers, or anyone passing through the area. And honestly, that’s totally okay.
For what it is and for the price point, we actually had a really solid experience here. Clean room, comfortable bed, friendly staff, and everything we needed without breaking the bank.
If you’re looking for a practical place to stay near Potters Bar—or even a decent stop before heading to Heathrow—this might be worth considering.

Location – Convenient for Potters Bar, Road Trips & Heathrow
One of the biggest advantages of staying at Premier Inn South Mimms is easily the location.
The hotel sits just off the M25 motorway at South Mimms Services, roughly 35 to 40 minutes northwest of Central London and only about 10 minutes from Potters Bar, which was perfect for us since that’s where we were working during this trip.
What makes this location especially convenient is that it’s connected directly to the service area, so you’ve got quick access to pretty much everything you might need without going far. Fuel stations, coffee shops like Starbucks, convenience stores, and multiple quick dining options are all right there within immediate walking distance.
It almost functions like a really well-equipped rest stop, but in a good way.
That made things super easy for us, especially after long workdays when we didn’t feel like driving around looking for food or essentials.
I also think this location works really well if you’re:
- Traveling for business in the Potters Bar area
- Road-tripping through the UK
- Passing through North London or Hertfordshire
- Looking for an affordable overnight stay before flying out of Heathrow
And speaking of Heathrow, this ended up being a surprisingly convenient airport stop as well, which I’ll talk more about later because we found a great taxi alternative that saved us quite a bit of money.
Overall Hotel Experience
Check-In Experience
From the moment we arrived, the overall experience was smooth and straightforward.
The front desk staff were friendly, welcoming, and got us checked in without any issues. Nothing overly flashy here, but honestly that’s exactly what you want after a long day—quick, easy, and stress-free. No complaints there.
That pretty much set the tone for the rest of our stay.
This hotel knows exactly what it is. It’s not trying to impress you with luxury amenities or upscale finishes, but it does a good job delivering the basics in a reliable way.
The Room
Our room had everything we needed for a comfortable stay: a king-size bed, a small desk area, TV, and a standard bathroom setup.
Simple? Yes.
Fancy? Not at all.
But functional and comfortable? Absolutely.
The room itself felt clean and surprisingly spacious for a budget hotel. More importantly, it never gave off that dingy roadside motel feeling, which is always a concern when booking lower-priced accommodations.
Sure, there were a few small things here and there that could probably be improved, but at this price point, it really feels unfair to nitpick too much.
The bed was comfortable, the room had plenty of space for our luggage and work gear, and overall it gave us exactly what we needed after long workdays in the area.
For the price, we genuinely had no major complaints.
Restaurant & Bar
Breakfast
When you walk into the front of the hotel, there’s a restaurant and bar area attached to the lobby, which is convenient if you don’t feel like leaving the property.
Breakfast is buffet-style and while it gets the job done, this was probably the weakest part of our stay.
It wasn’t bad by any means, but for the price, it left a little to be desired in our opinion.
There just wasn’t enough there to make us feel like it was worth paying extra for, especially considering how many quick and easy options are nearby.
Honestly, if you need breakfast in the morning, I’d probably recommend skipping the hotel breakfast and either walking or driving over to Starbucks or one of the nearby restaurants at South Mimms Services instead. You’ll likely spend the same amount—or less—and get something you actually want.
Dinner & Evening Bar
Dinner, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise.
After long workdays, we’d come back to the hotel pretty tired and ended up using the restaurant and bar more than we expected.
The bar was stocked well enough with beers, wines, spirits, and basic cocktails—more than enough if you just want to unwind for the evening.
What surprised us most was the food.
The evening menu actually had a pretty solid variety across the board, with enough options that almost anyone should be able to find something they like. More importantly, the food was genuinely good and very reasonably priced for the location.
Was it gourmet dining? Of course not.
But for a budget hotel restaurant sitting off a motorway service stop, it honestly exceeded expectations.
Considering the location, convenience, and pricing, I’d easily give the restaurant a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
How to Get There (Heathrow Taxi Tip)
If you happen to be flying into or out of London Heathrow and are planning to stay at Premier Inn South Mimms, getting there is pretty straightforward, whether you rent a car, use Uber, or book a taxi.
Since we were flying out of Heathrow at the end of this part of our trip, we looked at a few transportation options from the hotel to the airport.
Our first instinct was to check Uber.
Big mistake.
At the time, Uber pricing was nearly double what a local taxi service was charging, which honestly caught us by surprise.
Instead, I highly recommend using the phone in the hotel lobby—or simply asking the front desk—to call a local taxi company directly.
That ended up being by far the better option for us.
Our ride to Heathrow cost roughly £65–70, which was significantly cheaper than Uber, and the best part was being able to schedule everything in advance.
That made the whole experience way less stressful, especially when dealing with airport timing, luggage, and early departures.
So if you’re staying here and need airport transport, definitely compare prices before automatically booking through an app. In our case, going local saved us a decent amount of money.
Is Premier Inn South Mimms Worth It?
Short answer? Yes—if your expectations are set properly.
Premier Inn South Mimms is not a luxury hotel, a romantic getaway, or the kind of place you book for a full vacation experience. And that’s totally okay.
This hotel works because it understands exactly what it is.
It offers clean rooms, comfortable beds, friendly staff, a convenient location, and solid value without trying to be something it’s not. For us, that made it a great fit during this part of our UK trip.
Worth It For
Premier Inn South Mimms is a great option for:
- Business travelers working in or around Potters Bar
- Road trippers passing through the UK
- Budget-conscious travelers
- Anyone needing an overnight stop near Heathrow
- Travelers who prioritize convenience over luxury

At the end of the day, this property delivered exactly what we needed.
We got a comfortable place to sleep, easy access to food and essentials, friendly service, and a stay that didn’t wreck the budget. The breakfast could definitely be better, but the surprisingly solid evening restaurant helped balance that out.
Would we stay here again?
Absolutely.
If work or travel brings us back to the Potters Bar area, we’d have no problem booking Premier Inn South Mimms again.
